Oral Hygiene

When you’re looking for children and adult orthodontist in Muscle Shoals, we at Hudson Orthodontics are here to offer you the utmost in compassionate orthodontic care. We won’t only provide you with high-quality orthodontics and braces, such as our metal braces and clear braces, but we’ll do all we can to make sure that the orthodontic process goes as smoothly as possible for you. The first step in achieving a smooth and successful orthodontic treatment is to keep up with your daily oral hygiene regimen. If you need some help on how to do so, we’ll be glad to give you some tips.

Brushing with Metal or Clear Braces

Braces contain many crevices where food can easily get trapped, which is why it’s so important to brush your teeth four times per day in order to avoid the accumulation of food particles. We recommend brushing once after each meal and then again before going to bed.  The electric toothbrushes such as Oral-B or
Sonicare are great cleaning tools.

Flossing with Metal or Clear Braces

Flossing daily is also important for your oral hygiene regimen, but it’ll take more time and effort when you’re wearing orthodontics. If you’re having trouble flossing, we suggest using a reusable floss threader to floss under your archwire. To use it, simply pull a small length of floss from the dispenser and through the threader and then slide it both up and down along the fronts of each of your teeth. Make sure to use care around the archwire and don’t floss too forcefully.

Rinsing with Antibacterial Mouthwash

As a way to reduce inflammation to your gums and your cheeks, we recommend using an antibacterial mouthwash. This will both prevent infection and decrease irritation that can potentially develop from your braces. All you need to do is rinse your mouth with two teaspoons of the mouthwash for about one minute and then spit it out. You can do it after each time you brush, up to four times per day.

Using an Interdental Toothbrush

An interdental toothbrush is a great way to clean the areas underneath and around both your archwires and your braces. Just make sure to use this brush gently so that you don’t damage the archwires.

Applying Topical Fluoride

We also recommend using a sodium fluoride rinse or  gel that will help prevent tooth decay. This will kill bacteria and replace minerals that have been removed from the tooth enamel. Fluoride application won’t replace daily brushing, but it’s beneficial to be added to your oral hygiene regimen once before going to bed. To apply the fluoride, just place a small strip of it on your toothbrush and brush it on your teeth for about one minute and then spit it out. It’s important for the fluoride to stay on your teeth for 30 minutes so make sure not to eat, drink, or rinse during this time.

Cleaning Your Removable Appliance

If you have a removable appliance, you’ll also want to brush it everyday as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. Plaque and food particles can accumulate on these appliances in the same way as they do on your teeth and orthodontics, which is why you’ll need to soak your appliance daily. To soak your appliance, simply dissolve a denture-cleaning tablet in a glass of room-temperature tap water and place your appliance in it.
